Notebook

Notebook

Shorter than a note, looser than an essay — fragments, questions and ideas caught before they slip away.

Nicole Junkermann jotting an idea in a notebook

Not every thought is ready to be a finished note. The notebook is where Nicole Junkermann keeps the rest: a question worth returning to, a line from a book, a small observation that might grow into something or might not. It is deliberately unpolished, and better for it.

Reading these entries is a little like looking over a shoulder mid-thought. Some will become longer pieces; others are simply here to be remembered.

Entry

On simple defaults

The settings a tool ships with say more about its values than any feature list.

Entry

Slower is sturdier

A note that waits a day before it is shared is almost always the better note.

Entry

Read it aloud

If a sentence is hard to say, it is usually hard to understand. The fix is to simplify.
